The Great Sand Hills of SW Sask
One of the most amazing places we've ever visited...The Great Sand Hills of southwestern Saskatchewan. Leader, SK is the closest 'major' centre with a population of 1000...but Maple Creek is about one hour south (much bigger).
This location takes you from flat, flat farm land into rolling sand dunes. The map provided from the nearby museum (in Sceptre) provides driving directions to the most accessible dune. Most of the dunes are covered in vegatation (in an area of 1900 sq km), but within a 15 minute drive of Sceptre you can park near the base of the biggest pure sand dune I've ever seen. When we were climbing on it, we took pictures and pretended we were in Dubai!! The sand is like soft velvet and the kids were entertained for HOURS climbing and digging. There are no rocks, pebbles or garbage anywhere to be seen....just pristine sand like the best beaches in the world.
A MUST see : )) and completely free.
