Canadian Summer Travel Plans - Poll Results

NEWS RELEASE

June 19, 2009 -- For immediate release

Ottawa, ON

For Normand and Kirsten Schafer, owners of a Victoria travel agency, this year's summer vacation won't find them at the usual exotic destinations. Instead of jetting off to Paris, exploring the ruins of Machu Picchu or kicking back on the beaches of Tahiti, their family of eight has embarked on a two-month cross-country tour of their home country.

"This is the year our family is supporting tourism in Canada," Normand says of their 17,000-km voyage in a 31-foot RV which, since setting off in late May, has been home to the couple and their six children ages one to 14.

Since posting a request for travel tips on the company website in April, comments have poured in. Understandably, suggestions include such well-known tourist attractions as West Edmonton Mall, the Calgary Stampede and the coast of Cape Breton, but also more obscure places and events including the Whiteshell region of Northwestern Ontario or Saskatchewan's annual John Arcand Fiddle Fest.

"Of course, we can't see every place recommended by our readers," Normand says, "but we're trying our best -- especially when it comes to attractions of interest to children. It's heartwarming to see how many people have taken an interest in our trip. Hopefully, their suggestions will also inspire others to explore this beautiful country of ours."

Not only are visitors to the web site coming up with ideas for places to see, they have also responded to an online survey that asks, "Are you travelling within Canada this summer?" As of last weekend, 1265 votes were cast, with 27 percent of visitors saying they are planning on going to BC or Alberta while 20 percent were heading to the Maritime provinces, followed by 16 percent to Ontario. Twenty-five percent said they are going to another country while 19 percent are "staying in my own province."
