NEWS RELEASE
May 29, 2009 -- For immediate release
Victoria, BC
Packing two months worth of supplies and six children, ages one to 14, into a motor home and setting off on a 17,000 km voyage across the continent may not be everybody's idea of a relaxing summer vacation. But that's what one Victoria family is doing on May 31.
"We have travelled to many foreign destinations," says Normand Schafer, a travel agent. "But we figured it was time to see more of our own country."
And it won't be all just fun and recreation, for the children are home-schooled by wife Kirsten, and they will be taking their class to the road.
"They have each been researching different provinces and Canadian history and want to visit some of the places they have learned about," Normand says.
Not only that, but each of them is also specializing in a special project which they are looking forward to sharing with the others along the way.
In addition there is a high-tech component to the trip as the family will promote travel within Canada through online blogs, YouTube, social websites such as Twitter and Facebook, posting their route and GPS-mapped photos and videos on GoogleMaps and GoogleEarth. They even plan on taking along a Ham radio, for the three oldest children are certified operators.
"People will be able to track our daily route online and interact with us as we go," Normand says. "So, they too, will be able to share some of the beauty this country has to offer and perhaps that will give them ideas for their own travels close to home."
While the Schafers have already posted their preliminary route online, they are still soliciting Canadians to submit favourite places and events within their own provinces. To follow the cross-country adventure or to suggest destinations not to be missed by this family of eight, go to
