Travel Tips during Air Canada's Strike
Air Canada Strike action will affected call centres and services at the following airports:Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto Pearson, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax and St. John's NL
- Go to the airport early. There are expected to be longer than normal lines at check in kiosks and baggage drop areas. Give yourself plenty of time to manage the lineups.
- Where possible leave checked baggage at home. One carry-on bag and one purse/laptop are permitted on-board the aircraft for every traveler. Traveling without checked bags will avoid lining up at check in counters where Air Canada staffing levels will be limited.
- Make changes on existing bookings and book new tickets with a travel agency or online travel agency such as Cheap Tickets Canada. Air Canada call centre agents will be affected by the strike action which will result in extremely long hold times or an inability for Air Canada to assist with all calls. Cheap Tickets Canada is able to make new bookings and retrieve existing Air Canada bookings to make changes.
- Check in for your flight at home and verify flight status online. Checking in for your flight at home and pre-printing your boarding passes will enable you to skip the lines and go directly to security. It will also alert you in case your flight has been canceled or delayed.
- Bring a book and extra snacks. In the past strike action has resulted in long lines, waits, delays and cancelled flights. Make sure you have something to read, do and snack on while you are waiting at the airport, especially if you are traveling with children.
- Rebook flights online or with a travel agent. If your flight is cancelled over one hundred people may be trying to rebook their flights all at the same time. With limited people at the airport to assist this will be a problem. The first persons to get their flight rebooked will usually get the best alternate flight choices so you want to be quick. Have your travel agent's number handy.
