The record of a strange family who left a comfortable life in British Columbia to fly to the other side of the world to volunteer on Tanna, Vanuatu.
Where is Vanuatu?
Hey,look it up. It's a place where cannibalism still occurs, electricity flickers and falters much of the time, active volcanoes regularly threaten the life of the islanders
and the official language is Bishlama - a pidgin developed through centuries of trading with the western world.
We hope this will be an interesting record of the highs and lows of learning to live in a culture so different from our own.

Rachael speaks again:
I can't even begin to tell you what my favorite thing is. Everything is so new and wonderful and amazing! we just went on a trip to the other side of the island and stayed for a couple days in a little resort called Jungle Oasis. We stayed in a little woven hut, when you got inside it looked like you were staying in the seven dwarfs' hut - there were ten little beds in there. We got to eat eggs for breakfast for the first time since we left and that could possibly be my favorite thing. My definite not favorite thing would have to be the Volcano. As I listened to it erupt about every five minutes throughout the night I felt like I constantly had reason to fear for my life. I swear I will never set foot on the volcano again! Six times is enough for me! Mom thinks its addictive though, so staying true to my goal might cause some difficulties....
Here's a cool thing: We went to a John Frum village last night in the evening for their John Frum Celebration and there were tons of these beetles flying around that looked similar to cockroaches and their eyes glowed, brightly. The kids in the village were using them like how kids at home use glow sticks. They looked like little cars since their eyes looked just like headlights and if you held them they move and go 'click, click, click!'
Well, I gotta go now 'cause the family is starting to plan something and I have to help so that what we do will at least be partly sane.
