The record of a strange family who left a comfortable life on Saltspring Island, B.C. to fly to the other side of the world to volunteer on Tanna, Vanuatu.
Where is Vanuatu?
Hey,look it up. It's a place where cannibalism still occurs, electricity flickers and falters much of the time, active volcanoes regularly threaten the life of the islanders
and the official language is Bishlama - a pidgin developed through centuries of trading with the western world.
Our group consists of Dr. Dan, Sheira, his wife, and their home-schooled kids: Rachael, 16; Reuben, 16; Shaina,15; Aaron,13; Amalie,11; Joshua,8 and Teyvin,5, along with Heather, a 16-year-old friend.
Dan volunteers under the auspices of ViVa, an organization based in Victoria that commits to provide a doctor for the hospital on Tanna.
We hope this will be an interesting record of the highs and lows of learning to live in a culture so different from our own.
