Just recently flew with an american airline that wanted to charge me fifty dollars for my single bag (under 50lbs).I decided rather than pay for my luggage to fly, I upgraded to first class. Mathematically it didn't save me any money, however I didn't pay for any luggage fees, and I got warm cookies and a glass of milk
