Family of eight embarks on high tech trip across Canada

Victoria, BC - May 1, 2009
GPS cameras, laptop computer, blogs, Google Maps, Twitter... these internet aids are some of the "camping supplies" Cheap Tickets and Travel owners Normand and Kirsten Schafer will be hauling along on an ambitious 17,000-kilometre tour this summer. The couple is embarking on a marketing program to promote travel within Canada as they journey across the country with their six children ages one to 14.
"In spite of the current economic condition we are finding that people still want to travel, but they prefer to stay closer to home and spend less," says Normand.
In an effort to show Canadians travel opportunities within their own country, the Schafers plan on visiting the 10 provinces with a high tech component to their trip.

"We hope to generate travel ideas through online blogs, YouTube, social websites such Twitter and Facebook and by posting our route and GPS mapped photos and videos on Google Maps and Google Earth," Normand says.

People will be able to track the family's daily routes and interact with them as they go. They will be armed with GPS-enabled video and digital cameras as well as a Ham Radio -- the three oldest children are certified Ham operators -- to stay in touch with those wanting to see and listen to the progress of their adventure. Their goal will be to expose some of the destinations within Canada including attractions, national parks and unique natural treasures.

They have already posted information on the basic route they plan to take from June 1 until mid July 2009. The family is also soliciting input from Canadians to suggest favourite places to visit within their own provinces.

"I've travelled all throughout the world and figured it was time to see more of my own country. This will be the year our family is supporting tourism in Canada and explore the southern parts of this beautiful country from coast to coast," Normand says.
